Reviewing "Christian" books is always a dangerous proposition on BookAngles. So many issues are important to many Christians, and so many of us are so sure we hold the "correct" view on those issues, that it is so very easy to step on toes. I easily get into more trouble reviewing such books than any other type.
That said, people will likely either love or hate The Yada Yada Prayer Group. I am among the former group.
I found the story compelling, well-written and interesting, throughout. The characters were delightful, but in the last chapter and a half, the story hit me like a punch in the stomach. Actually, more like a Mack truck. Suddenly the main character was facing herself in ways that were painfully close to home. I found myself weeping in repentance and grateful, anew, for the grace I have been shown. To say more might ruin some of the power of the message for readers who follow.
This wildly diverse bunch end up being so "real" with each other, they made me hunger for that sort of fellowship with other Christian women instead of the more common scenario, where we all maintain our "nice" masks and impress each other (or try to) with spirituality. How refreshing!
Definitely for older teens and adults rather than children, The Yada Yada Prayer group is not standard "Christian" novel fare. It packs a punch and there is meat to chew on. I understand that there are other books in the series. I have not yet read these, but look forward to doing so. Highly recommended for moms and their mature older children, though the book is likely to be more appealing to an adult than a young person.
