Difficult elements would keep me from letting younger children read or listen to this story. These include intense and violent passages and situations which might prove confusing, such as the incident described in Noteworthy Issues concerning Harold's marriage. That said, the story is far superior to most more modern tales. The 11th century comes vitally alive, and the story captivates. The King's Shadow also comes in a very well-read audio version, which you might find in your local library.
