Summary: Popo And Fifina tells of two poor but happy Haitian children, their close-knit family, and their simple, hardworking, honest way of life. Popo and Fifina, and their parents, leave the hills of Haiti to move to a small town by the sea where the father can earn a living as a fisherman.

Our Angle

Popo And Fifina is an adorable story, told in simple language that will give young children a pleasant, if rather rose colored, picture of what Haiti once was. As a story book it has just the right amount of gentle adventure to keep the reader interested.

The fact that this book is so completely innocent and sweet is remarkable considering the joint authors radical, controversial and sometimes socialistic adult works, some of which concern Haiti and their outrage at the situation of the black people there. A little is told about the authors on the back of the Opie Library edition. The descriptions of the author's political leanings will require parental discretion.
