Summary

Author: Richard and Florence Atwater

Summary: Mr. Popper, a house painter who is fascinated by the Arctic regions, receives the gift of a penguin , whom he names Captain Cook. Another penguin is added to the household to keep Captain Cook from being lonely and then baby penguins come along. The story tells of the humorous adventures of the Popper family and the penguins, both at home, and traveling with a trained penguin act.

Our Angle

Mr. Popper's Penguins delighted our children. It's funny, imaginative and well-written too, as you might expect from a Newbery Honor winner. It's relatively fast and easy to read, although I like it best as a read aloud so everyone can giggle together. The Poppers are people of integrity, down to the final decision to do what is best for the penguins rather than what would make them money.

It's also a great book to illustrate a lifestyle of learning and the benefits of being passionate about something and learning all you can about it. Highly recommended.
