Summary

Author
: Carolyn Treffinger

Illustrator: Kurt Wiese

Summary: Li Lun, who lives in a fishing village in China, is afraid of the sea. On the day when all ten year old boys accompany their fathers to fish for the first time, Li Lun is too afraid to go. Humiliated in front of the villagers, his father tells Li Lun that he must climb the nearby  mountain, plant seven grains of rice and not return home until he has grown seven times as much rice as he started with.  The boy exhibits a type of courage other than that exhibited by the fishermen, as he weathers the elements, tends the plants, keeps them watered and protects them from rats, gulls and sun, thus accomplishing a task no one in the region had for generations .

Our Angle Our Angle

Li Lun is a short, easy to read book that packs a lot more meat into it than the typical early chapter book. The book portrays a culture and way of life that is so totally different from our own that this aspect alone is ;ikely to keep a reader interested. Li Lun exhibits many fine character qualities that parents will appreciate as inspiration for their children. Although the villagers have numerous superstitions and are of a different religion, my experience tells me that there is little cause for concern about introducing youngsters to these elements; they are interesting, but not enticing, because they are totally unfamiliar and in a setting remote from the typical reader's lives. Overall, Li Lun is well-written and provides examples of good character qualities wrapped in an engaging story.

End Slavery

The best way to show your appreciation for this free service:

Free the slaves

For many years, our focus was on helping families train their own children. Our heart is still there, but this season of life has us focused on something old, yet new – slavery. More people are held as unwilling slaves today (27 million) than at any time in history, including over 200,000 in the U.S., mostly women and children.

If you appreciate the service BookAngles has provided over the years to you and others, then we invite you to show that appreciation with a donation to our work with International Teams.
