Our Angle

I enjoyed reading I, Juan de Pareja because it gave a different view of this time period than most, which tend to focus on England and France. One thing that struck me was the difference in the way black men were treated at that time in Spain, and the way they were treated not all that long ago in the United States. While a slave did not have the same freedoms as a free white man, a black man in Spain was still considered a man and not some kind of lower life form, and a free black man had the same rights as a free white man. He could take on a profitable trade and become wealthy and influential.
