Because of Winn-Dixie

Summary

Author
: Kate DiCamillo

Summary: Because of Winn-Dixie is the story of ten-year-old India Opal Buloni, who recently moved ,with her preacher father, to a small town in Florida. She finds and adopts a big ugly dog found inside the local Winn-Dixie grocery store and names the mutt after the store. Opal misses her mother, who abandoned her and her father, and she is lonely in the new town. Because of Winn Dixie, she befriends many "odd" characters in town, learning to understand and love them, and finally knitting them all together into a generous community of friends.

Our Angle Our Angle

I liked Because of Winn-Dixie. It knit together a simple story with a generous- spirited look at people, with all their foibles. Without preachiness, the reader is encouraged to look past the surface, to understand why people do the things they do and to abstain from snap judgments. I liked the fact that Christianity was not ridiculed and that Opal's dad, a preacher, is warm, kind-hearted and human. Once you feel your children know about and are ready to handle issues like alcoholism, abandonment and the like, I would recommend this book.

End Slavery

The best way to show your appreciation for this free service:

Free the slaves

For many years, our focus was on helping families train their own children. Our heart is still there, but this season of life has us focused on something old, yet new – slavery. More people are held as unwilling slaves today (27 million) than at any time in history, including over 200,000 in the U.S., mostly women and children.

If you appreciate the service BookAngles has provided over the years to you and others, then we invite you to show that appreciation with a donation to our work with International Teams.
