The Bears on Hemlock Mountain

Summary

Author
: Alice Dalgliesh

Summary: Eight-year-old Jonathan is sent over Hemlock Mountain (really just a hill near his home) to fetch a large iron pot from his aunt, which is needed for an upcoming family celebration. He is a bit frightened, because he fears bears. Because he lingers too long at his aunt's home, Jonathan comes back after dark and does, indeed, encounter bears. He resourcefully hides under the pot until his father, who is out looking for him, arrives and rescues him.

A delight of a book, especially for young boys who are just starting to read chapter books, since this one is a  short and easy read.  The Bears on Hemlock Mountain portrays a warm extended family life, good work ethic, the satisfaction of tackling a needed job and facing one's fears and the pleasures of home. I like the fact that Jonathan is resourceful and does what he can to protect himself when the bears come, but it is his father who protects him and rescues him in the end. Everything in the story portrays good values and character. Highly recommended.
