Summary: This is the true story of Amos Fortune, who was born to be king of the At-mun-shi tribe in Africa in 1710. At 15, he was captured by slave traders and brought to Massachusetts where he lived as a slave until age 60, at which time he bought his freedom. Then he saved and bought the freedom of several others. At 70, Amos Fortune began settled life with a wife and adopted daughter. He was an expert tanner. He died in 1801 and his tombstone, which can be seen today, reads "Born free in Africa, a slave in America, who purchased his liberty, professed Christianity, lived reputably, and died hopefully."
