20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

Summary

Author:
Jules Verne

Summary: Set in the late 1800’s, 2000 Leagues Under the Sea is the story of  a French marine biologist, his manservant and a Canadian mariner who are held prisoner aboard a unique submarine, the Nautilus. On board , the biologist studies all manner of fascinating sea life, and admires the great technical knowledge of the ship’s mysterious Captain Nemo, while pondering the man’s motives and past. Captain Nemo, Latin for "no man," has resolved never to set foot on land again, living entirely on resources he harvests from the sea.

Our Angle Our Angle

This classic has much to commend it. It would be especially useful, coupled with reference materials, for a study of marine life and for geography study as well. Some students will enjoy tracking the travels of the Nautilus with precision, since coordinates are given throughout its travels.

That said, we found it a bit tedious in its descriptions of sea creatures and the general writing style rather dull, While God and scriptures are mentioned throughout, one does not come away thinking the author had a Christian worldview. Science seems to be admired supremely. There is little in the book's outlook or characters to admire, inspire, or encourage. 2000 Leagues Under the Sea is not a BAD book, but it is not a great one, either, and there are many others I prefer.

End Slavery

The best way to show your appreciation for this free service:

Free the slaves

For many years, our focus was on helping families train their own children. Our heart is still there, but this season of life has us focused on something old, yet new – slavery. More people are held as unwilling slaves today (27 million) than at any time in history, including over 200,000 in the U.S., mostly women and children.

If you appreciate the service BookAngles has provided over the years to you and others, then we invite you to show that appreciation with a donation to our work with International Teams.
